I’ll start off by saying, I’m not a real big Robert DeNiro fan. That being said, I must say that this movie is, in my humble opinion, one of the best that Mr. DeNiro has ever made, or at least in the last 20 years.
“The Intern” co-stars Anne Hathaway as the founder and executive of an internet startup clothing company. Her HR person (played by Andrew Rannells from the TV show “The New Normal”) comes up with the idea to employ senior citizens as interns in her company to share their experience with her employees. DeNiro’s character, Ben is a widower who has retired from his career working 40 years at a phone book printing company, and has tried learning new languages, yoga, travel, among other things, trying to keep busy and find purpose in his life. Ben responds to the flyer he sees posted in his New York City neighborhood and applies for a position.
After being hired, it’s decided that Ben would be a good fit to be the intern of the company’s overworked, disorganized owner/founder, Jules. She doesn’t think so, because in her mind, the last thing she needs is someone looking over her shoulder telling her how to run her company, but when the investors on the board suggest that maybe she needs an experienced C.E.O. to help her deal with the company’s overwhelming, unexpected success, Ben might be just what she needs.
With her stay-at-home husband and daughter feeling ignored at home, and work piling up due to her lack of organization and management skills, the only thing that has made Jules’ company successful is her marketing skills and knowing how to take good care of her customers.
With his decades of experience and natural people skills, Ben finds his way into the ranks of his co-workers. With Nat Wolf (The Fault in Our Stars), Adam Devine (Andy on “Modern Family”), Zack Pearlman (Archie in “Community”), Anders Holm (from TV series “Workaholics”), and Linda Lavin as supporting cast members, I think THE INTERN will be one of those movies that will probably not win any Oscars, but it’s a story told with a lot of heart that is very timely with the internet leading the business world today. Anne Hathaway and Robert DeNiro both give outstanding performances with the perfect on-screen chemistry that just makes this a fun movie to watch.
