Tammy, which was co-written, co-directed, and co-produced by Melissa and her husband, Ben Falcone is the first laugh-out-loud movie of the summer. With the amazing supporting cast including Susan Sarandon, Allison Janney, Toni Collette, Sandra Oh, Dan Aykroyd, DJ Zulu and Kathy Bates, “Tammy” tells the story of a down-on-her-luck overweight girl who loses her fast-food job, totals her car by hitting a deer, and arrives home to discover her husband cheating on her with a neighbor, all in the same day. Such is the luck of Tammy. She decides to get out of the little Illinois town where she’s lived her entire life, and go somewhere to get a fresh start but discovers her life savings to be a measly $67. So her Grandma, brilliantly played by Susan Sarandon comes to her rescue with a roll of $6700 and her car. Her Mom, played by Allison Janney thinks it is a bad ill-conceived idea, given Grandma’s medical condition and dependence on insulin due to her diabetes, but nothing can dissuade Tammy from getting away and Grandma from escaping on a road trip, so off they go!
What ensues is a hilarious romp of getting arrested, getting drunk, raucous sex, a lesbian party, blowing things up, and a sweet story about discovering happiness where you least expect it. I usually am not a “BIG FAN” (pun intended) of Melissa McCarthy because most of her humor is just fat girl humor, making herself the brunt of her jokes, and while there is certainly enough of that in this movie, there’s also some great moments due to the brilliant casting of Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates, and Allison Janney in the supporting roles. While it is probably not going to be nominated for any Oscars, for lighthearted summer movie fare, “TAMMY” is a good time that will make you laugh and maybe even cry. Susan Sarandon gives one of the best performances of her career and Kathy Bates makes a wonderful lesbian!
