Spring Breakers- My Review

2 buckets of popcorn

My Rating: 2 Buckets of Popcorn- Good Movie Worth Seeing…

The timing for the release of “Spring Breakers” is perfect if the production company wanted to frighten parents into cancelling their teenage kids’ reservations to be part of this year’s Spring Break in Florida, or if they wanted to ensure that kids would do whatever they needed to do in order to be there! That’s how “Spring Breakers” begins with Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Rachel Korine, and Ashley Benson trying to figure out how they are going to get the money so they can get away from their studies at college and head off to Florida to PAR-TEE!

Four girls

Four teen college girls get into mayhem in Florida on Spring Break.

Much controversy has been raised about the Disney teen role models tarnishing their squeaky clean reputations by doing this racy sex-driven movie which has been called “Girls Gone Wild” on steroids.

James Franco as “Alien” and “Wizard of Oz”.

It is also a totally different role for James Franco who looks more like a white Snoop Dog styled pimped out drug dealer, complete with corn row hair braids and grills on his teeth. Sitting in the theater as I was watching Franco, I couldn’t help but think how contrastive this performance was compared to last week’s blockbuster hit where he was the young Wizard of Oz! It just goes to show Franco’s amazing versatility as an actor.

Faced with the dilemma of how to raise the money to make the trek with their peers to the raucous fun and debauchery in Florida, the girls concoct and execute a plan to perform an armed robbery at a diner using realistic looking water pistols. With their ill-gotten gains in hand, they hop on the bus headed for the sunshine state! Upon arriving at the beach, it takes no time at all for the girls to get involved in the drinking, dancing, and drugs and before they know what has happened, they find themselves arrested and in jail for underage drinking and drug usage with nothing on but their neon bikinis.

Spring Break

Drinking, Dancing, Drugs, and Sex at Spring Break.

Being the ultimate opportunist, Alien (played by Franco) bails the girls out of jail and invites them to come back to his place where he shows them his lavish luxurious lifestyle and piles of money he makes from his drug sales. Instantly seduced by the silver-tongued drug lord, the girls become his posse and arm candy as Spring Break continues.

“Spring Breakers” is an unabashed look at just how raunchy the Spring Break partying in Florida can be and serves as a perfect example for parents to use when they forbid their children from going. It is almost as much of a documentary as it is a movie. There is plenty of female nudity but no male nudity for the girls to enjoy. It’s an ok movie to see but don’t have high expectations for it to win any Oscars.
