Watch it at home. Wait for the DVD.
I like Joseph Gordon-Leavitt so much, I didn’t think I could EVER see a film with him in it that I wouldn’t love, but I’m sorry to say, this movie sucks. From the very beginning of the movie, you have the impression that you’ve stumbled into a sleazy porn theater and you feel dirty. It is difficult for me to believe and accept that J. G.-Leavitt wrote and directed this movie which he also stars in along with Tony Danza and Scarlett Johansson.
If you look at this image, you’ve seen half of the movie, because that’s what it is all about.
The movie starts out with JGL’s character, Jon narrating that there are only a few things in his life that are important to him, and the most important is his PORN. The entire movie centers around his addiction to online porn and the dysfunctionality it causes in his life. In his opinion, porn is better than having real live sex because real girls don’t know how to do it right, or don’t want to. They won’t do oral sex, they only want missionary position, not to mention the emotional baggage that comes along with the real sex. None of that matters when he is watching porn, in his estimation.

I don’t believe that I’ve ever seen a movie with more times using the word “FUCK” than it is said in this movie. It will be interesting to see where it stands on the list of movies with the most “fucks” in them. Currently, the top ten movies using the word FUCK is:
1. Nil by Mouth (470)
2. Casino (422)
3. Another Day in Paradise (327)
4. Summer of Sam (326)
5. Twin Town (320)
6. Sweet Sixteen (313)
7. Narc (298)
8. Born on the Fourth of July (289)
9. Big Lebowski (281)
10. Tigerland (276)
Jon attends church weekly with his family, confessing his weekly sexual escapades to his priest to be forgiven of his many sins.
I felt as I was watching it that this movie was Joseph Gordon-Leavitt’s thinly veiled attempt to scream to the world, “I’M NOT GAY!!!” Through the dialogue he wrote for himself to the subject matter of the entire film from start to end, and the imagery of the nearly naked porn stars and his painfully graphic description of his sexual escapades, not only in the narration but also each week to his priest as he attends church with his family, it oozes heterosexuality.
And after going to church each Sunday, he goes back to his parents’ house for dinner and he gets into super macho yelling matches with his father, played by Tony Danza, both sitting in their wife-beater undershirts almost ritualistically.
Tony Danza and Joseph Gordon-Leavitt face off against each other each week at Sunday dinner after church.
While this movie wasn’t everything that I expected it to be, it is getting mostly good reviews from audiences and critics alike. I don’t understand how thinly disguised soft porn can receive such positive acclaim, but I guess that is what we have devolved into, a race obsessed like JGL’s character with sexual gratification. It lacks any vestige of human morality, being filled with out-of-wedlock sex and obsessive attitudes towards women and sexuality as well as partying and using women like they are disposable.
See “Don Jon” and make up your own mind about it. Let me know what you thought of it in the comments below.
