About Last Night is a remake of the classic movie from 1986 starring Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, and Jim Belushi which follows two couples through the ups and downs of their year-long period, in and out of relationships and love affairs! It brings together some stars from the big screen with some up and coming stars from the small screen in this new all-black comedy version for 2014. Kevin Hart delivers with his usual fast-paced comedic outbursts especially in conversations with his best friend played by Michael Ealy, the gorgeous, steel-blue eyed android in the new Fox TV series, “Almost Human”. Another TV star making the transition from television to the big screen is Joy Bryant who plays the wife of Dax Shepard’s character, Crosby on NBC’s popular family drama, “Parenthood”. The cast is rounded out by the talents of Regina Hall who played the lead role of Brenda Meeks in four of the five Scary Movie films, Candy in The Best Man and its sequel The Best Man Holiday and as Corretta Lipp in the FOX comedy-drama Ally McBeal.
Many of the funnier parts of the movie revolve around how entire relationships are sometimes developed around such stupid things as old sayings and wives tales, such as not being the first one to say “I love you” because it means you care the most and it puts you in the weakest bargaining position. There is lots of sex and sexual innuendo throughout the film as well as hilarious negotiations about such important things as who’s turn it is to be on top or what position to use this time. It also shows how misunderstandings and miscommunications can so easily lead to heart rendering breakups.
I think Michael Ealy and Joy Bryant give excellent performances portraying the gamut of emotions ranging from the utter ecstasy of orgasmic bliss to mistrust and disappointment, all the way to sheer devastation and frustration.
Kevin Hart and Regina Hall are the obvious comedians throughout the film going from one outrageous situation to another. If Kevin Hart wasn’t a comedian and film star, no doubt he would have been an auctioneer because he can talk faster than just about anyone I’ve ever seen! None of the actors are too modest in the movie either with more than enough gratuitous nudity to keep audiences from getting bored and falling asleep!
They even have an homage to the original 1986 movie when Ealy’s and Bryant’s characters are watching an old movie on TV and it happens to be Rob Lowe and Demi Moore in the original version, which was quite a nice touch I thought. At the screening I attended, the whole audience was laughing their asses off from start to finish except when Ealy & Bryant were making love, and there wasn’t anything funny about those scenes! In fact, there may have been some smoke coming from the screen.
If you enjoy romantic comedies, you’ll enjoy this sweet funny remake. It’s not going to win any Oscars, but it is a fun movie. Please comment below!
